Revenants
Collaborative sound environment, with Cassia Streb and Cody Putman, for Indexical and Beyond the Grave, Evergreen Cemetery, Santa Cruz, CA, May 12-13 and 19-20, 2023.
Nine sounding objects assembled from bluetooth speakers, cigar boxes, LEDs, and vellum, arranged on walking paths and among grave markers, cycling through recorded sounds from bowed metal, wood, and strings, and small hailstorms of 10d nails and old keys.
One keening melody, adapted from Caoineadh na dTri Mhuire, as sung by Joe Heaney, and performed by musicians from Ghost Ensemble, one note per breath.
One river of bells released by participants through the cemetery’s central concrete drainage channel to a holding area near the entrance.
